Leading by example is the best way to cultivate trust loyalty and a hardworking team.
What do you think makes a great leader?
A great leader is somebody who:
-
Empowers each and every member of their team, irrespective of experience or seniority, to share their ideas in an open-minded environment. In most cases, there is no such thing as a stupid question - it’s simply sharing knowledge.
-
Doesn’t shy away from making mistakes or getting things wrong from time to time. We’re all human. I’d rather work for a manager who expresses how they are feeling, as long as it’s not volatile.
-
Makes everybody feel they are welcome, and they belong. We spend a long time working, most of our week, so if we feel left out, or not part of the group, it can be detrimental to both the company and employee.
-
Communication is key. Goals, targets, objectives, performance, feedback - whatever it is. Employees who feel they are up to date with what is going on, will operate more efficiently and feel part of the success of the company. There can be a case of “too much information” so a good manager will find a balance in terms of “need to know”… A bad manager, though, hides all of this information away and doesn’t keep the team in the loop.
-
A great leader isn’t afraid to get stuck in when the going gets tough.
A great leader is someone who is unafraid to do all aspects of the work their team does in order to learn and understand. They’re a great communicator who puts trust in their team, empowering them to thrive.
Be willing to have uncomfortable conversions.
I think great leaders put trust in their team and make sure their team has the tools they need to thrive
A great leader doesn’t feel the need to be the smartest person in the room. They are a good listener, a good learner, and they are able to synthesize disparate pieces of information and different datasets in order to see a larger more accurate picture or to solve a problem creatively.
So many wonderful traits mentioned here. For me, it’s empathy and dedication.
Mentors, listens, can empathize, and lead…not demand.
A good leader is always a good listener.
I think a good leader is someone who supports there team, listens and is approachable…also a good leader isn’t afraid to get in the trenches when busy or help is needed and dig in! A great leader makes you feel part of the team, your voice matters… not just a number!
I have a Servant Leadership style. When immature or constrained in its development, it can definitely enable those with poor work ethic to steamroll you and pick up after their work or messes. However, appropriate positive and negative reinforcement tactics, depending on the responsiveness results of each individual, are very valuable to learn. Also important to understand each individual’s learning styles that best suit them to make sure multiple formats in training can be made available. A mature Service leadership style naturally elicits respect by making sure everyone is heard, listened to, problems addressed, and that they have all the tools and resources they need to do their job successfully. And also that you have no problem being right there on the front lines with them when necessary. No job or task is below you when it’s all hands on deck. But you balance that with a command of mutual respect. The steamrollers and bad apples reveal themselves much quicker due to you earnest, humble, yet honest, no-fluff approach to solving problems as a team - acknowledging hierarchy (which is natural and necessary) without harping on folks through power trips, etc. Also, resourcefulness, transparency, clear delegation, and supporting merit measurements, as well as asking for employee feedback on a regular basis is what can help create an environment to get the most of your workers. This also provides them agency over their role and safe space to express or test out their ideas, encouraging growth and innovation. But this also all depends on industry, roles, and objectives + deadlines. The underlying principle can be quite an ethical and sturdy foundation to build upon, yet flexible enough for growth and checks & balances for avoiding non-productive power trips while still maintaining authority.
A great leader listens, connects, educates and inspires his teams.
A great leaders leads by example, is humble and willing to admit if he is wrong.
A great leaders serves, and values the team.
Someone who listens and respects and leads the people around them.
A great leader is persuasive, motivating, willing to get into the trenches and is kind.
A great leader leads by example. They inspire, they mentor and they are invested in your success. They show, not tell. They lead, not manage. They never ask you to do what they themselves are not willing to do.
Put yourself in their shoes
Leaders have a clear, compelling vision for the future and can articulate this vision to inspire others.
Active listening, being relatable, never forgetting where they came from
Great leaders lead by example.
A great leader is emotionally intelligent, thoughtful, able to triage well and either understands their business/org top to bottom or has the skill to choose the right people and get out of their way.
